The Man Behind Energy Transfer Kelcy Warren on Staying in the Game
When Hart Energy honored Kelcy Warren as a 2023 Hall of Fame inductee, it was recognizing someone who has shaped the midstream energy sector for nearly half a century. During the Hart Energy LIVE exclusive interview that accompanied the ceremony, Warren reflected on the honor, praised his fellow inductees, and made one thing unmistakably clear about his future: leaving energy behind is not something he can do. In his own words, it is impossible.
Kelcy Warren’s tenure in the industry spans more than 45 years, beginning after he completed a civil engineering degree at the University of Texas at Arlington in 1978. Early positions at Lone Star Gas Company and then Cornerstone Natural Gas built the technical and commercial knowledge that would later power one of the industry’s great entrepreneurial stories.
From Texas Roots to National Scale
Kelcy Warren and Ray Davis co-founded Energy Transfer in 1996, starting with about 200 miles of natural gas pipeline serving intrastate markets in Texas. What followed was a multi-decade expansion across virtually every segment of energy infrastructure. The company now owns or operates close to 140,000 miles of pipeline carrying natural gas, crude oil, natural gas liquids, and refined products.
Energy Transfer transports approximately 30 percent of U.S. natural gas and petroleum, exports natural gas liquids to more than 90 countries, and operates import and export terminals on both the Gulf Coast and East Coast. The company generated revenue of roughly $82 billion in 2024, reflecting the scale of what Kelcy Warren and his team assembled.
He handed over the CEO title to co-CEOs Mackie McCrea and Tom Long at the start of 2021, remaining with the company as executive chairman and chairman of the board. That shift removed him from the daily grind without removing him from the work he loves. The Hart Energy Hall of Fame cemented a legacy that Warren himself seems entirely unwilling to stop adding to.
