Michael Polk’s Leadership Years At Unilever

When Unilever recruited Michael Polk away from Kraft Foods in 2003, the consumer goods giant gained an executive with a rare mix of manufacturing, marketing, and integration experience. He was brought on to lead the company’s United States foods business, a large piece of Unilever’s North American operations.

His performance there led to a bigger role. From 2006 to 2010, Michael Polk served as president of the Americas, responsible for all of Unilever’s brands and operations across North America and Latin America. During this period he introduced what became known as the “One Unilever” operating model, an approach that strengthened commercial execution across the region.

Building A Stronger Commercial Model

The “One Unilever” model helped accelerate growth while also increasing operating margins, a combination that can be difficult to achieve at the same time. Polk’s success in the Americas region led to a promotion in 2010, when he took on the role of president of Global Food, Home and Personal Care at Unilever’s global headquarters in London. In that position, he oversaw category strategies and innovations across the company’s full portfolio.

Michael Polk’s work at Unilever did not go unnoticed outside the company either. In 2009, while still leading the Americas business, he was invited to join the board of directors of Newell Rubbermaid. That board seat proved to be the beginning of Michael Polk Newell Brands next chapter. Newell Rubbermaid asked him to become its president and chief executive officer in 2011, a role he would hold for eight years.

The commercial discipline Polk built while running Unilever’s operations across two continents became a central part of how he approached his new job at Newell. He carried lessons from the “One Unilever” model into his own transformation, one that would eventually help grow Newell‘s net sales from $5.4 billion to $9.4 billion. Michael Polk’s years at Unilever stand as a turning point that connected his earlier commercial experience to the larger leadership role that followed. Refer to this article to learn more.
