Kelcy Warren Steers Energy Transfer Into New Markets

Natural gas-built Energy Transfer’s early success but falling prices forced Kelcy Warren to look elsewhere for growth. That search led the company into the natural gas liquids business and, soon after, into crude oil, reshaping what had started as a regional gas gatherer into a diversified midstream operator.

Finding Room in NGLs

After an earlier acquisition target fell through, Energy Transfer turned to Louis Dreyfus Highbridge Energy to establish a foothold in natural gas liquids. The move gave the company processing and fractionation capacity it lacked and set the stage for years of related construction projects.

Kelcy Warren then turned his attention to crude oil. The opportunity arrived unexpectedly. He was in New York when he received a call suggesting that Sunoco might be open to a sale. Kelcy Warren flew to Philadelphia within hours to help put the deal together, and the transaction eventually closed at a value of $5.3 billion. “I couldn’t believe I was doing it,” he said. “I was like, this is just too good to be true.”

Building on the Foundation

The years that followed brought a mix of organic growth and heavy investment in fractionation infrastructure, work that let Energy Transfer process the natural gas liquids it was now gathering across multiple basins. That foundation supported a fresh round of acquisitions starting in 2014, including Susser Holdings, Regency Energy Partners, PennTex Midstream Partners, USA Compression Partners and SemGroup.

Each addition pushed Energy Transfer further from its East Texas origins and closer to the sprawling, multi commodity network Kelcy Warren has spent nearly three decades assembling. What began as a defensive pivot away from a single commodity turned into one of the more consequential stretches in the company’s history, proof that necessity can drive expansion just as effectively as ambition.
