When Judd Zebersky returned from his extended stay inside Chinese toy factories in the late 1990s, he brought back something most toy company founders lack a ground-level understanding of how products get made. That technical knowledge gave Jazwares a different foundation from the start one built on operational awareness rather than pure commercial instinct.
The early business model centered on licensed merchandise. Jazwares secured agreements tied to major entertainment properties including Minecraft, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Fortnite. Consistent retail presence through trusted entertainment brands gave the company footing in a competitive market. Pokémon licensing added further depth to the catalog as the company’s distribution footprint widened.
Acquisitions Reshaped the Portfolio
Jazwares moved into acquisition mode in the final years of the 2010s. Wicked Cool Toys was added to the company in 2019, broadening its product base. The more consequential deal came in 2020, when Kellytoy was acquired, bringing Squishmallows into the Jazwares family.
Squishmallows soft, collectible plush toys built around individual characters with names, bios, and squishdays became a phenomenon. The brand spread across TikTok, attracted celebrity fans including Lady Gaga and Kim Kardashian, and sold more than 100 million units in a single year. At retail prices between $5 and $30, the toys drew collectors across age groups.
Jazwares drew external capital from Alleghany Capital Corporation beginning in 2014, with a majority stake acquired in 2016. Berkshire Hathaway inherited the investment in the fourth quarter of 2022. The company now distributes products across more than 100 countries with a workforce of approximately 1,400 people. Judd Zebersky formally stepped down as CEO on March 20, 2026.
